The Lagos State Police Command is the territorial formation of the Nigeria Police Force responsible for maintaining law and order across Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial and most populous city. It operates under the command of a Commissioner of Police and falls within Zone 2 (which also covers Ogun State). The Command oversees multiple Area Commands, police divisions, and specialized units deployed across urban, suburban, and coastal areas of Lagos. Its core mission is to prevent and detect crime, protect lives and property, enforce laws, and ensure public safety in a highly dynamic environment characterized by dense population, heavy traffic, economic activities, and diverse security challenges.
In daily operations, the Lagos State Police Command tackles armed robbery, cultism, traffic management, kidnapping, cybercrime, and civil disturbances while providing rapid response through units such as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mobile Police, and Counter-Terrorism Unit. It collaborates closely with state government agencies, neighborhood watch groups, and other federal security outfits to enhance community policing and intelligence gathering. The Command frequently deploys large numbers of personnel for major events, election security, and joint operations to maintain peace in one of Africa’s busiest metropolitan areas. Despite facing unique pressures from urbanization and crime patterns, it strives to deliver professional, accountable, and citizen-focused policing services to residents and visitors in Lagos State.
