Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) / Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA), operating under the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency (LNSA), is a uniformed community-based security outfit established by a law of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2016. It was created to complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and other federal security agencies by providing grassroots-level support for maintaining law and order in neighborhoods across Lagos State. The Corps operates in all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, with officers recruited locally to enhance proximity and intelligence gathering. Its primary mission is to build safer communities through proactive presence, information sharing, and collaboration with residents, police, and other agencies, while promoting public confidence and reducing opportunities for crime.
In practice, the LNSC focuses on gathering intelligence on suspicious activities, crimes in progress, and potential threats; patrolling neighborhoods to deter hoodlums, cult groups, and criminal elements; maintaining order at the community level; and enlightening residents on personal and neighborhood safety. Officers do not carry firearms but support police operations by providing local knowledge, assisting during emergencies, and helping enforce state laws. The Agency emphasizes training, accountability, and community participation to create a model community safety structure that reduces crime through partnership rather than confrontation alone. It continues to receive support from the Lagos State Government for equipment, training, and expansion to strengthen urban security in one of Africa’s largest megacities.
