About

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) is a specialized tactical detachment of the Lagos State Police Command, established in 1999 to provide swift and effective response to security emergencies across Lagos State. It was created by restructuring the earlier “Operation Sweep” initiative to address the high rate of armed robbery, violent crime, and public disorder in Nigeria’s most populous and economically vibrant state. Operating under the Lagos State Police Command and headed by a Commander (often a Chief Superintendent of Police or Assistant Commissioner), the RRS maintains a visible 24/7 presence through motorized and foot patrols, quick intervention teams, and strategic deployment of armoured vehicles and motorcycles in flashpoints and high-crime areas. Its core mission is to protect lives and property by responding rapidly to distress calls, preventing crime through proactive patrols, and restoring public order during incidents.

In daily operations, the RRS handles armed robbery alerts, traffic-related emergencies, civil disturbances, accident scenes, and other time-sensitive security situations. It works in close collaboration with other units of the Lagos State Police Command, the Lagos State Government, and emergency services (dial 112 or 767 for RRS assistance). The squad emphasizes speed, professionalism, and community-oriented policing to reduce response time and build public confidence. With an estimated strength of nearly 3,000 officers in recent years, it has earned recognition for significant contributions to crime reduction and maintaining peace in Lagos through sustained show-of-force operations, intelligence-driven raids, and rapid reinforcement during major events or crises.
