About

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, often referred to as the EOD-CBRN Command, was established on 1 June 1976 as a specialized technical formation of the Nigeria Police Force. It originated as an offshoot of post-Nigerian Civil War needs and has evolved into a dedicated command responsible for handling explosive threats across the country. Headed by a Commissioner of Police at Force Headquarters, the unit focuses on the detection, neutralization, and safe disposal of conventional explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards. It plays a critical role in counter-terrorism, internal security operations, and emergency response by providing expert bomb disposal support to other police formations and security agencies.

In practice, the EOD Command conducts risk assessments at high-threat locations, renders safe unexploded ordnance, supports major public events and elections with preventive sweeps, and trains personnel in advanced disposal techniques. It regularly collaborates with international partners such as the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and foreign agencies to upgrade skills and equipment. The unit has been instrumental in recovering and safely evacuating dangerous explosives in conflict zones like Borno State, preventing potential disasters and saving lives. Through continuous training programs (including recent graduation of hundreds of officers in EOD-CBRN operations), it enhances the Nigeria Police Force’s overall capacity to mitigate explosive and hazardous material threats nationwide while maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism.
